The Lichtenburg Game Breeding Centre

The Lichtenburg Game Breeding Centre is a project of the National Zoological Gardens of South Africa whose headquarters are in Pretoria. The main aim of the Centre is to augment the National Zoo’s breeding programmes of endangered species and to supplement the animal populations the Zoo.

The Lichtenburg Game Breeding Centre outside town provides a good network of roads facilitate the viewing of animals. The hide at the vulture restaurant allows one to view these magnificent birds at close quarters.

The healthy herd of Pére David's deer is the pride of the Lichtenburg Breeding Centre.

The mhorr gazelle is one of the three races of the dama gazelle that used to occur in the arid zone from southern Morocco to Senegal. They became extinct in their natural habitat during the 1960s, but zoo breeding programmes have been so successful that groups have been reintroduced to parts of their former range.

The Lichtenburg Game Breeding Centre in the North West was born out of a need to breed endangered species and was formed in 1974. A total of 6000 hectares of highveld was made available to the National Zoological Gardens of South Africa.

The game breeding centre houses and breeds many endangered species including white rhino, Pere David's deer, Cape mountain zebra, scimitar-horned Oryx and Arabian Oryx.

The Game Breeding Centre is situated in the North West Province, 240km drive south west of Pretoria or Johannesburg. It is on the northern outskirts of Lichtenburg.
